Earthquakes Earthquakes are sudden trembles of the earth due to the release of energy from the earth's crust. Some of them are unexpected and unanticipated. Though people can be prepared at times with the aid of proper awareness. Earthquakes bring tremendous amounts of damage (depending on it's intensity) whether it's landslide or unevenness of the ground. |
How to react
Find anything sturdyDuring an earthquake, find anything that is sturdy enough to protect you from any falling debris. Perfect examples of these are study tables, chairs with arm desks, etc.
If you are an open area inside a building try to cover your head with any possible object that would protect you from serious injury. An example of these are books. If you really can't find anything that can be used as a cover , then at least use your hands. |
Take note that during an earthquake, refrain from staying near fragile objects for they are one of the major reasons why people get seriously hurt during the event. Also, stay cover no matter what until the shaking stops.
Get out in an orderly mannerWhen the shaking finally stops, try not to act hysterically (such as panicking). Find any object that would protect your head from debris (in case of an aftershock) and use them to protect your head by using them as cover while getting out.
If you have other people with you, make sure you get out in an orderly manner. Remember to bring a cellphone with you (it might come in handy) and abandon anything that is unnecessary. |
Remember that never get in an elevator after the event, it might lead to catastrophic results. Using your cellphone, send updates about your progress in leaving the building to anyone you know such as: your friends, relatives, etc. (for them to know that you're safe at least). If possible, try to use the fire exit since it's designed to keep out flames since the whole thing is air pressured.
Don't let your guard down just yet
Even when you're outside the building, that doesn't mean that you are already safe. Don't let your guard down until it is certain that it has finally stopped. Expect aftershocks, most earthquakes are accompanied with aftershocks. And when that happens, get to an open area while covering your head with your hands and keep your head down by the way.
When everything is over, the first thing you might want to do is check yourself and people with you if they have major injuries. If one of you really do have one, then seek medical attention quickly.
